Emotionally gripping!

Wow...this was a surprise from Monica McCarty. Since this novel was barely reviewed and not glowingly, I was hesitant to purchase it. I was pleasantly surprised. It had a number of unexpected twists and went in directions I didn't expect. The main characters were very multi-layered and complex....both having good and bad sides to their personalities. They each made many mistakes and paid the price for them. I liked that they were so much more than the typical hero and heroine of the average historical romance. I really felt the emotion of what they were going through and shed a few tears at their pain. Any book that can make me cry must be exceptional as it rarely happens. It tells me how invested in the characters I was and how strong the story is to draw me in so completely. I also want to mention how hot the love scenes were...scorching hot!
I would recommend this novel to those who are looking for an unusual historical romance with some raw, darker and deeper elements running through it.

My least favorite Monica Mc Carty book.

I have read most all of Mc Carty's books and, to be honest, this is my least favorite. Her writing is still good, although this book dragged in places and then skipped some storyline in an attempt to keep the book moving. It began as heartwrenching, but it never really broke through that mold. Although the main characters seem to heal at the end of the book, there is no joy in this story. I only felt their agony, mainly because they never seemed to feel anything but that emotion. Even at the end, the happiness that we should have expeienced with the characters never materializes. I found myself simply depressed. I want to come away with emotion at the end of a book, but this book seemed to evoke only one emotion in me and that was sorrow. Simply not an edifying read.

The Unthinkable

Monica grabs your attention from the very beginning and she won't let go until the very end.......leaving you wanting more. I don't know if she plans on making a series from this story, but I can only hope.

There are a couple of her characters in this story that I'd love to see developed into something more and there is one particular unsavory ass that I'd love to see his downfall.

However, the two main characters in this book are torn apart from the very beginning and their journey back is a long and arduous one. With lots of bumps in the road ahead of them, some large and some small, makes the coming together that much more poignant. With tragedy, betrayal, mistrust, and a deep unwavering love (which neither one totally understood), they finally come together again. Still not totally convinced, Genie cannot give herself fully to Fitz until she looses him.....or she thinks she has.

Beautifully written and a departure from her Highlander series, this Ton story is well worth the adventure Ms. McCarty takes you on. Highly recommend this book. Happy reading! Cheers!

Good Book, Even Better Movie

This was a quick read, I finished it in one day. There weren't a lot of surprises for me because because I'd watched the movie (which shockingly was actually better than the novel, in this reader's humble opinion.) I think the film captured the atmosphere of the small Italian village caught in a heat wave more fully then the book, maybe it was the lack of detail on the book's part. It's brevity means that relationships and characters are a little bit underdeveloped, though the boy is still a compelling protagonist. "I'm Not Scared" has a plot that immediately draws the reader in, even more so if you haven't seen the movie. It is fast-paced, exciting, and emotionally arresting, due in part to the theme of kids in peril. If you want a quick read that instantly grabs your attention, this is the book for you. Also, as I said before, I can't recommend the movie enough, it's one of my favorite foreign films..

Very different book.The setting is Italie. A very tiny poor village and the people in it and told from the perspective of a nine year old boy.His becoming of age ,in a very dark way...Grown ups that betray...Grown ups that are rude and awful.....Poverty and the rich living next to each other and having total disregard for each other.

A boy's passion and courage

Niccolo Ammaniti's "I'm Not Scared" is a small wonder. Told in a pulsating, dramatic fashion it is the story of a boy, Michele, who risks everything to save another boy his age, Filippo, as the circumstances surrounding Filippo change. Ammaniti's book is one where the children bear the maturity and the adults are rendered needy of care.
"Im Not Scared" is a tale of the heart. The reader roots for Michele at every turn and watches him as he battles his own fears only to turn them into a breathless triumph. The author beautifully gives a picture of the wheat fields of southern Italy and the "aliveness" of a small town that would otherwise be described as sleepy. Distances and time are presented in a desirably vague way, increasing our imagination of the bravura of Michele.
The one downside is the English translation by Jonathan Hunt. (no relation to me!) It is obviously translated into "British English" so many of the words and phrases are confusing. A better translation for Americans would have made the read a little less jumbled and more satisfying. Still, "I'm Not Scared" is a book not to be missed and can easily be a treasured read of an evening.

This book is a wonderful reference. It describes the little (and inexpensive) things you can do to make your environment safer for your immune system. There are tables of reference. The ideas provided on cleaning products, personal hygiene, medical, are everything you need to know to help yourself.
It is short and condensed. You can read it quickly and use it for a reference for years to come. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make their "space" a life-long healthier way to live.

We discuss many topics of Cynthia Fincher's book "Healthy Living in a Toxic World" in class and I have found that as a student I have only started scratching the surface of many serious issues. There are many things I didn't even think about until I enrolled in Ecological Psycology and Cynthia Fincher brought them to my attention. I strongly encourge everyone to read her book, it is very informative. This book will open every persons eyes who read it to many issues that are going on and will countine going on unless we as people can take alternative measures. Gary Burleson
