About the Author
Ivan Rodriguez Duch is director and cofounder of Secret Seduction, the first school of its kind in Latin America. Motivated to deal with his own problems of interacting with the opposite sex, he has dedicated almost a decade to the study of relations between men and women. Six of these years involved teaching and currently he juggles his life as director of Secret Seduction with his career as a professional musician. Martin Pablo Albamonte is director and cofounder of the Secret Seduction School. With a degree in marketing, he has spent the most recent years studying the techniques of seduction. In addition to his contributions to this field, he also works in the world of magic and currently directs the ABA school of magic, which he also founded.

Not sure why?

I'm not sure why this edition of The Secret Language of Birthdays does not even come close to the original. I have the original (non-teen) edition and it is loads of fun with an 85%-95% accuracy (from what I have found) about the day you are born. The teen edition is definately geared towards teen girls ONLY and every person I know that took a look at it said this did not sound like them at all, in their teens (or even now). What a giant disappointment because the original, with the exact same authors, is truly uncanny and totally fun!

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my teenaged son because he is into astrology. When I received it, I learned that it was geared towards teen girls, so I had to return it. However, form what I flipped through, it was REALLY interesting and fun. Any teen girl would LOVE to receive this.

I thought this book would be as good as the 'original' but written for teens. When you look at teen version compared to 'original' the info is quite different. I bought it to share with my daughter but she found it boring.

The language Glisic employs is the vernacular of the uneducated and illiterate rural population in the mountainous regions of western Serbia along the Drina River valley in the 18th and 19th centuries. In contrast to the heavily ornamented and wordy prose so common among his 19th century contemporaries in Russia and the west, Glisic deliberately wrote in a sparse, plain, and raw style, accurately reflecting the mannerisms of village life and culture, an approach used by Mark Twain in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. Similar to 19th century American author Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle, Glisic mined local folklore to retell the story of the vampire Sava Savanovic. As such, the text presents a wealth of ethnographic material. Glisic offers valuable insights into the roles of women and children in the traditional patriarchal Serbian zadruga, a family-based agricultural cooperative that formed the basis of village life. The role of alcohol in hospitality, causing and settling disputes is also quite evident. And village gossip plays an important role in the everyday life of both men and women. Of particular note is Glisic’s description of the folk beliefs surrounding vampires, how they are found, how they are killed, the forms they take, their physical appearance, etc. In this, Glisic accurately reflects folk beliefs still present today in many rural areas of the Balkans.

Strahinja (Strakh-in-ya) and Radojka (Radojka) were in love ... a love that was forbidden by her father Zivan (Zhi-van). This almost sounds like the opening for many vampire stories that have been written over the years.

This story, however, was written in 1880 and although we see the young couple live happily ever after, it is the course of events which, as you will read, leads to the discovery of the vampire, Sava Savanovic (Sah-vah Sah-vam-o-vich) by Strahinja. The young suitor risks his life to help the people of Zarozje grind their wheat into flour knowing each miller before him had been the victim of a night stalker.

The tale is told about the “vampire” Sava, who frequented the watermill each night for some 90 years to feed on the millers who worked there, and the search by the villagers to find and destroy him.

It is important to note that in order to understand the time and circumstances that this story takes place in, reading the Translator's Notes and the Foreword are necessary as it gives you a greater understanding of the tradition and cultural flavor of the Serbian backdrop of the Village of Zarozje (Za-rozh-ye).

I must admit, having read many books with regard to vampire legend, I wondered whether this tale would take the same road as others have in the description of how the vampire happened on his victims and if the feeding method the vampire used was of a sanguinary nature. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Sava, the vampire, did not feed on the blood of his victims but through forceful touch, sucked out their life essence culminating in the death, by strangulation, of each of his victims.

Thank you, James, for taking the time to translate this wonderful piece of vampire lore. A piece of lore from the very cradle of Vampire legends that belies the popular notion of vampires biting necks and drinking the blood of their prey.

Agatha-finalist Dobson's sixth mystery to feature English professor Karen Pelletier (after 2003's The Maltese Manuscript) earns a passing grade. Karen is up for the sole open tenure spot in her department at Massachusetts's Enfield College, but the department chairman is championing her underqualified Native American colleague, Joe Lone Wolf, which sends Karen into a dither. She also worries about her boyfriend's deployment to Iraq and her daughter's jaunt to Nepal. After someone slips Joe a fatal overdose of what may be peyote, she becomes the prime murder suspect. Plenty of other suspects emerge from the stereotypical cast of faculty and students, as Dobson trots out a plague of academic bugaboos, including drugs, false credentials, plagiarism, faculty in-fighting and hate crimes. About the Author

John Kuriyan is Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology and of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career at Rockefeller University, New York and has been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1990. His laboratory uses x-ray crystallography to determine the three-dimensional structures of proteins involved in signaling and replication, as well as biochemical, biophysical, and computational analyses to elucidate mechanisms. Kuriyan was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2001.

Boyana Konforti is the launch Editor of Cell Reports, an open-access journal focused on short papers in biology. Konforti earned her PhD at Stanford University in the Biochemistry Department with Ronald W. Davis studying the mechanism of DNA recombination. Her postdoctoral studies at Rockefeller University with Magda Konarska and Columbia University with Anna Pyle were on the mechanisms of RNA splicing. Konforti has been a professional editor for over 13 years; most recently she was Chief Editor of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

David Wemmer is Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and has served as Vice Chair, Assistant Dean, and Executive Associate Dean since joining the faculty in 1985. His research in structural biology uses magnetic resonance methods to investigate the structure of proteins and DNA toward a better understanding of how these molecules function. Systems studied include DNA-ligand complexes, covalent DNA adducts, protein-DNA complexes, and diverse proteins involved in cellular regulatory processes. Wemmer is a Fellow of the AAAS and a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi.

Excellent book - conceptual approach

This is an excellent book. Includes quantitative problems and explanations, but the approach is highly conceptual. Writing is clear and easy to read, at least, for a science text. I dropped the class because my schedule was too full, but am keeping the book as a resource.

Excellent introduction to biophysics

This book is well-written and well-organized with plenty of helpful examples, graphs and figures. It's a little equation-heavy, yet it still manages to keep the reader's focus on point.

Not all professors dislike this book!

Reader and Gardner didn't like the book; well, to each their own. As a professor, I _do_ use this as a class text.

R&G is right; the explanation on p161 for the beta-alpha-beta being (almost) always right-handed is "no convincing explanation" - while I have always thought it was to do with the natural twist of the beta-strands making the "overhand" - right-handed connection shorter, and thus more favoured. But this surely is a matter about which one could disagree: maybe the authors are right, and there is indeed no "convincing" explanation.

I haven't used it for the basic structural matters, which can be found in books like Petsko&Ringe or Branden&Tooze. However, as an introduction to a statistical thermodynamics way of approaching structure, I think it is excellent. It may be that the Dill&Bromberg "Molecular Driving Forces" would be good too; I have it on my shelf, but it is almost certainly too much for my students and for the time I have.
