Too Bad Some Folks Missed The Point

I'm sorry that the previous reviewers seem to have missed the point(s). I felt like this story was trying to explain a lot of things. Okay, so Rayven's character was not explained in the first two pages, but we discover as we go along why his personality is hidden.

Ash, as we know is a complex peronality. Each character sees a different side of him; they may all agree on some points, but each has their own experience of how Acheron will or has responded to a given situation. More of his true nature is revealed in each book. I mean, why would he put up with the "heifer goddess" if he didn't absolutely have to? And his dealings with Nick... Remember it has been said that the fates of those most closely tied to him are hidden from his vision. Nick was his best friend, so his fate would especially be hidden from Ash. I felt that it was Nick's inability to be blinded to some of Acheron's powers that gave their relationship a special meaning. Would you really want to be able to control the fate/feelings of someone? How would you know if what they are feeling about you is not just because you manipulated it, but what they really feel?

And as for Susan... I liked her character. Who cares if her marial arts training came into play later in the book? After all, she was trained by the Dragon, a Dark Hunter as well. People react in different ways. Some have to be guided to a feeling or reaction, but some just attack the situation verbally if not physically (Susan did both after she got used to her new perception of reality).

Give the story a chance. Ms. Kenyon writes about men who had to lose something in the past, in order to gain something even more valuable in the present. Her female characters have to be strong to defeat the Dark Hunters' pasts.

Diappointed DH Fan :(

I was pretty upset about this book. I am a huge Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor fan and I love the DH series (hence the 1 star) but this book was a huge let down for me.

There were a couple of things that I had a HUGE problem with believing. First, I must have missed something because I do not remember Nick being Impervious to Ash's mind control. I was really uncomfortable with how the whole Nick & Ash relationship was portrayed in this book. Second, I just could not buy the humans & Daimons working together thing. I know that there are some stupid humans out there but I would like to think that we are a bit smarter than to ally with someone who could wipe out our entire neighborhood in an hour if we pissed him off. Third, Rayvn's character was not fully developed before he moved forward into a relationship with Susan (the most annoyingly sarcastic woman ever!). The love story here is hard to believe and I have a real problem with Rayvn remaining a DH as it is stressed throughout the DH series that Dark Hunters cannot have long term relationships. Lastly, WHAT DID YOU DO TO ASH???? Ash's development in DSofM was completely unbelievable to me; unless of course he is Daimon-possessed in this book and we don't find out until the next book in the series. That must be it because the Ash in this book is very different from the one portrayed in previous DH series books.

When I first started reading this series I was captivated by the range & depth of feeling the characters had. I hurt, cried and celebrated along with them because Kenyon's writing brought them to life for me. The last couple of books have lacked the character and story development I had come to expect from the DH series. For example, I could easily see what made Kyrian become a DH, I felt his gut wrenching anguish with him, experienced his absolute need for vengeance right along with him; by the time I finished his and Amanda's story I was breathless, I felt like I had been a character in the book and had been right beside them throughout. The last couple of DH stories have left me cold. The character development, story development, and eloquent creative writing that I have come to look forward to from this author have been missing and instead I am reading about new characters that are shallow and seem to be introduced for the sole purpose of adding a new angle to the series, bizarre personality changes to old, well-developed characters that are left unexplained in writing but seem to be added for the sole purpose of adding a new angle to the series, heroes/heroines that are starting to become very similar to each other i.e., very sarcastic, shallow, quick-witted to the point of annoying and all with the ability to think about sex pretty much in any situation and with people they just met.

Please, please, please Ms. Kenyon: I do not mind waiting a whole year for the next book if it means you will take the necessary time to develop the story and write the DH books like you used to. If I put any pressure on you in the past to get a DH book out quickly, please forgive me and know that I will not do it again. I really need a DH story I can escape into so I promise to wait patiently.

Let Down

Like the previous reviewer, I was pretty upset about this book. I too am a very big fan of the DH series and have been reading religiously for over three years now, but this is definitely the worst of the series.

Susan is just way too sarcastic. Annoyingly so. In fact, I think that most of the heroines in the series are starting to become very similar to each other. Quick-witted, very sarcastic, and with the ability to look at a strange man (in an otherwise very tense situation) and think about sex. Seriously, although I love the big men/sexy vibes, I'm starting to get bothered by the seemingly unrealistic atmosphere that is being dead ending at Repetitionville.

Something that this book lacked was the true, heart-clenching angst. IE Kyrian or Zarek angst. I feel that these last few books, especially DSofM, really fell short in that department. That is one of the things that first had me hooked in this series.

Ash's developement has also made me flinch. What happened to the arrogant, cocky Ash we were first introduced to? His character has definitely changed, and it seems to me that the original Ash is different from the Ash we now come across in DSofM.

I know that the AG said that Ravyn was itching for his story to be told, but it appears with her writing that it was quickly put together. It lacks the heart that made me fall in love with the first few books. Storylines appear to be repetitive and unoriginal. I'm not sure if it's her love of the series that is making her drag on stories or the need to please her readers, but that's what these last stories seem to be doing: dragging on. Maybe it's both. But I would rather see her write one great book like the beginning ones than see five let downs like this one.

I gave one star because even though I was very disappointed with this one, my love for the series is deep. The second star goes to the little things hidden inside. The bringing back of other characters from previous stories is always a plus, especially in this series.

I hope that the future books will have that missing heart that the originals had. I would also wait for the softcover book instead of paying the $11-$20 for the hardcover. There really isn't a need to run off and buy this one. And you probably won't be able to read it in one sitting. I had to force myself to read through a lot of the pages and found myself skipping over a few paragraphs. The characters, especially the constant sarcasm, have ruined a lot of the story that could have otherwise been better.

One thing I try to do is look at each book on its own. Yes you have to look at it in the sense of a series but what I mean is that I try not to let my liking an author or a series muddy the waters. Sometimes I succeed sometimes not. This time... I enjoyed the first series in this world. It was an interesting story with fun and thought out characters. If you read that series you know that there was plenty that was left undone, that it was part of a greater series. That means that while it is a new start it should still advance things as a whole.

When I first heard about this new character Tarah and how she was the protagonist I was disappointed and somewhat concerned. When I found out Justan would be back in book two I was happy and concerned. After reading this book I am more concerned. If Justan is going to be the main protagonist in the next book where does that leave Tarah? I can see what she will be doing and how it could affect things in the greater scheme of things but adding another POV is worrisome. I'm concerned it could dilute the story with it following too many characters at once.

I HATED Tarah at the start. She is for one thing annoying. She has a habit of talking about herself in the third person. Tarah Woodblade is not a coward. Tarah Woodblade is strong. She ACTUALLY says this to other characters!! UGH!! She did grow on me a bit as time went on but I still just didn't really like her. Internally she is also kind of whiney, those two things combined were probably what did it for me. I didn't care about her or Djeri either for that matter. He was kind of plain to be honest, o he is special don't get me wrong but he acts kinds of like Lenui only not as intense.

The bit about Arcon the author mentioned? Boring. It is really just used to reveal the antagonist for the series, that's it. Some interesting things? Sure, but still boring.

The story itself was kind of like the beginning of the bowl of souls series in that it is more a personal tale and lacks much in the way of greater scale. Honestly I was not impressed by the book. We don't get any new information really about the world or how it works. It could have been interesting to see the world through two new POVs but we not really given that chance. We are not really treated to any new information or experiences. Just what is going on with Tarah and how she is being pulled into the greater plot. Actually that is a good way to look at it. It reminds me of Hilt's Pride in that it feels more like a way to bring new characters into the story than to advance a plot. Only this time it is a whole book not a short story.

I'm disappointed. So far this may be my least favorite book the author has written, I have no desire to reread it. That being said I will be buying the next book. I am concerned about where the series has gone so far but I am still willing to follow it, at least for now.

It's okay but not Cooley's best

I gotta say - I love every single one of this author's books - except for this one..
I find it hard to like this Tarah character and as for Djeri, he's an okay character but not especially remarkable.

The only highlight in the book for me was in the epilogue where Justan & friends finally made an appearance.
Hopefully this series will improve as time goes by. I'm still a loyal fan though Mr Cooley - keep up the good works!

Nice start for Tarah

Mr. Cooley has introduced a complex new character into the mix of his fantasy world. Tarah treads ever-so-lightly into the anti-hero realm for parts of this book, but the well conceived storyline drags her back to the reality that everyone else around her sees.

As with any new book in a series, there is a lot of information to impart to the reader, and new relationships to be discovered.

I predict she will become a much loved character in her own right. I also like the non-standard portrayal of the dwarves, more insight to the rogue horses , and of course the teaser at the end.

This book is another winner from one of my favorite authors.

Analyze Your Dreams

Well, did you ever have these dreams that you just KNOW mean something? I mean, they're different than the jump-around nonsense dreams. Every so often I do, and I thought it would be fun to get this book and check themout myself. (I used to ask a girlfriend who was pretty good at dream analysis. Now I do both--look it up AND ask my girlfriend. Then I look to see how the 2 analyses match up. Where are they the same? And did she come up with something I missed?) Anyway, it's fun. Sometimes dreams throw something up in our face that we need to address in some way.

With all that said, this is a pretty impressive book with some good information. It is a full sized, hard cover 678 page book. We are talking some serious information here. Of course, you should probably read the whole book, then play with it by looking things up. No, I did NOT read the whole book. Here's how I use it:

Let's say you have a dream. You are walking across a bridge. Under the bridge is lots of water and the water is rather violent. You walk across the bridge without fear and you make it to the other side, unhurt.

OK. So, you go to the index in the back of the book and you look up "bridge and water". "Bridges" appears on 5 pages, so you look them up and read. "Water" appears on about 16 plus pages, depending on what you were doing with the water (traveling on it, drinking it, etc.). You start reading and see if it makes sense. Of course, this is the dollar store analysis I'm giving you right now. You may have more stuff in your own dream, and when you go to the page, there are often other questions.

So water symbolizes emotions and opportunities for enrichment. In Greek mythology, river crossings are often associated with death or a journey into the unconscious. Crossing a bridge indicates an ability to move forward and achieve the success you long for. It represents your underlying strength to cope with difficult challenges. The bridge is a potential link of your past with a possible future.

So, if I was analyzing this dream, I might conclude (depending on any additional circumstances in the dream) that I was moving forward into the future and was quite capable of handing anything (emotions, etc) that came up in my transition, even if the "waters" became turbulent. And not only was I CAPABLE, but I successfully crossed over the bridge/achieved the transition. At this point, I might look at other factors in the dream and see if that analysis makes sense to me based on what is going on in my life.

Don't buy this book if you're a worry wart and you are gonna read a bunch of negative crap that will depress you.

Do buy this book if you're interested in analyzing your dreams to either learn more about yourself and/or just for fun.

If you want a dream analysis book, this one has a heck of a lot of info!

An Extraordinary Doctor

I met Dr. Yu in 2001 when I brought a family member to see him. He belonged to an organization of physicians whose focus was environmental medicine. Not only has he found parasites in our family, but also significant heavy metal toxicity (particularly aluminum, lead and mercury). Using EAV as he describes in his book, he has been able to uncover a huge hidden cavitation that my dentist could not diagnose using panoramic x-rays for 5 years running...this issue can be directly involved in heart disease. I've sent many of my complex patients to him over the years. I'm happy to say besides being my physician, he is now my mentor and friend. His example has given me the courage to practice integrative medicine in a way that brings healing to patients by using logic and critical thinking skills not seen in common practice these days.

Very important book

As Dr. Yu explains the five root causes of most disease which doctors repeatedly misdiagnose are really caused by parasites, hidden dental problems, heavy metal toxicity, food allergies and nutritional deficiencies. Did you get that? This is what this book is about and they are more important than I could have ever imagined: Parasites, hidden dental problems, heavy metal toxicity, food allergies and nutritional deficiencies. Is the mercury in your teeth causing your anxiety? How much mercury was in you last flu shot? Did that root canal in your mouth cause your last heart attack? Are the parasites in your lungs making you grumpy as they eat your nutrients, crap their acid waste, lay their eggs, and travel the highways of your blood vessels? Sound like an exaggeration that these things could do all this, Dr. Yu believes so and he backs up his principles with thirty years of experience as a medical doctor who has also served as a doctor in the military for thirty years. If I could go back and only read one natural health book this would be it (and i've read a hundred). His chapters on the intelligence of parasites and their life cycle is shocking, to say the least. The testing for parasites by medical doctors is worthless as they often don't show up in stool samples, yet according to him and he is quoting the World Health Organization, something like 80 million Americans have them in them and they're controlling your mood, appetite, when you go to sleep and may be affecting your health in various ways. Dr. Yu compares the medical professions sluffing off parasites as something that only happens in the tropics to centuries ago when doctors refused to wash their hands after working with dead bodies, then they would go deliver a baby (yes this was common practice then). Hmmm.... I wonder why so many women are dying. Even after doctors continued to come forward with new information around the 1860's regarding the dangers of not washing your hands, the American Medical Association refused to change. Parasitology just isn't taught in medical school, except for the occasional guy who takes a tropical medicine class, but even then its not enough. Doctor Yu is one of the few doctors in this country who actually frequently looks for and prescribes anti-parasite medications. Even though the medical profession have the resources to supply these drugs to the millions of people who unkowingly need them, they don't have the knowledge to understand they're value or how rampant the problem of parasite really is. He provides resources with phone numbers of places and people who are knowledgeable in this field in the back of the book. If you notice the cover you will see an acupuncture dummy and a violin. Dr. Yu is a violinist and he compares how he treats patients to tuning a violin. With any new patient Dr. Yu uses an electro acupuncture voll (EAV) machine that reads the meridians after he puts acupunture points in the hands and feet and he can tell you if you have parasites in your kidneys for example, or heavy metals in your thyroid. So its not just a guessing game for him, he really knows. In the second chapter Dr. Yu provides pictures of the teeth and he highlights which ones correspond with what acupunture meridians. So for instance, if you have had an infection in anyyone of your two front buckteeth, those two teeth correspond to the intestines energetically. (This is acupuncture by the way, this stuff goes back thousands of years). So you may be suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and never suspect an infection in your teeth is the culprit. The teeth are more important than I ever realized. Despite having read many alternative medicine books as I mentioned this one contained knowledge that for me was the most uncommon. For example in fighting parasite Dr. Yu outlines a parasite cleanse that follows the lunar calendar of the moon. Parasites in our bodies leave the tissues of our bodies during a full moon to lay their eggs. So Dr. Yu recommends three days prior to a full moon or new moon you take anti parasite herbs like wormwood, clove oil, grapefruit seed extract, garlic, pumpkin seeds and on and on. Uncommon extremely interesting knowledge like that floods this book right from the get go to the end. Oversimplified version of what I learned from this book: Never get a root canal; don't trust doctor X-rays (you still may have an infection); Never get a flu shot(full of mercury and they don't even work), Get these stupid mercury fillings out of my teeth as soon as possible. Know matter what health ills you may be suffering with or just want to expand your knowledge and help others this book touches more subjects on more health problems than I could possible lay it in a few paragraphs.

Not Read the book but this doctor found my disease when several other's could not!

I don't need to read Dr. Yu's book to believe in what he says. The end of 1994 I could barely focus/concentrate, really had to think about putting one foot in front of the other just to walk. Could barely work, come home, pass out 7pm to 7am. Wasn't in pain or anything just total exhaustion and weakness. From 94 to 97 went to several doctors from several internists and regular MDs to allergist, chiropractor, kinesiology and none could help. Several offer antidepressants, wanted to treat one thing then later another illness I supplied on my history sheet. In my gut I knew they were all wrong and then I found Dr. Yu. When I first walked into his office several patience were being treated for mercury toxicity. I thought oh no he is single minded. Well I was wrong.

He test you in a way no traditional doctor would. Your ph level, hands you a device to hold as he check's your meridian/acupuncture points. Sort of like a volt ohm meter, a positive and negative cords that go into a computer. He did an hair analysis to see if my minerals etc were In balance or not. He looked at my blood cells letting me view on a screen. My white blood cell's were not moving and my red ones were all distorted. Not good. He did find my mercury level way off the scale. After 5 mercury detox chelation treatment's I was walking, talking, laughing and had more energy than ever in my life.

My background: my mother told me as a baby I would turn blue often and they would rush me to the hospital. From young age I was diagnosed as anemic, with a goiter, had the 3 day measles often, would faint easily, get worn out easily and had multiple allergies (several dust, ragweed, and more), my nose constantly ran then I took allergy shots for years until I got tired of my nose being stopped up for years.

After being treated by Dr. Yu, I was left with only one allergy, which is cat dander. I've handle lots of stress and get a cold or flu type symptoms once a year. I can't say enough about this man and his long studies and practice in both western and eastern medicines. I just recently retired, had all my mercury fillings and root canals remove so I am back working with him now to detox and cleanse my body further. He treats the whole body and mind, not just symptoms.

Like he told me in 1997, if you have multiple symptoms or problems, if traditional doctors just think your depressed or it's in your mind or they want to treat just one thing at a time then there is an underlying problem in your system causing all these symptoms whether it be a heavy metal, mineral imbalance, a parasite etc. I guarantee with his methods he will find your problem and get you heading in the right direction toward a better quality of life.

Don't judge the book by its cover

Diana n'Athena is ready to go home. An "Amazon" from the all female planet of "dey Sorormin" (which Wolfe translates as the Sisterhood), Diana is a sociologist employed by the Terran Intergalactic Empire for the last 20 years as a Cultural Liaison and Feild Operative. Approaching forty, Diana has served the last five years on Aggar, a patriarchal, pre-industrial, semi-feudal planet located on the Empire's border. Over six foot tall, lean, strong and brown-eyed, Diana must pass as male to work effective on Aggar. Such a charade is not uncommon for Amazons serving on "primitive" planets, but it does wear on their spirits. Facing her last mission before she can return to her home world, Diana must locate and rescue a Terran pilot. He carries information that may mean the salvation of the Empire which is on the brink of war.
After years of working alone, Diana is not pleased when Aggar's ruling Council of Ten assigns her a native "Shadowmate." Shadows are individuals trained for years to act as guides, protectors, linguists, trackers, companions and whatever else is needed to aide the individual whom the Council has determined is important to the future of Aggar. Such assignments are one of the ways the Council "tips the balance" of fate for pivotal individuals and gently guides the planet's future.
Diana's Shadow, Elana is particularly special. In addition to her training and expertise, she bears the rare "Blue Sight." This extrasensory gift (genetically linked with blue eyes)allows her to read people's intent via their aura and create illusions. For years Elana has been training to become a Shadow. For the last five years she's been experiencing dreamlike visions of the Amazon that she is to Shadow.
"Shadows of Aggar" is a classic heroic quest. As such, the journey itself, what happens to both women during the trek and what they learn from the various encounters, is as important as the result of the quest. -- Although having the end of the empire as it is known hang in the balance does build the suspense! -- There are some similarities between Aggar and some other fantasy realms. Yet these parallels reflect cultural archetypes and Wolfe, who died in 1997, created some interesting, unique details and characteristics for three cultures: Aggar, Amazon and Terran. For example, imagine a race of humans whose skin color changes with excitement or exertion, thus making the racial differences we know, moot. Furthermore, Wolfe created the basics of a language for the "dey Sorormin" and provided a glossary of words from Aggar and the Sisterhood in the back for reference.
"Shadows" was originally released in 1991, and this reader has returned to it at least twice in the last decade. The story and characters hold up to re-reading. The same is true of Wolfe's second Aggar novel, "Fires of Aggar." Happily, the publisher has made a commitment to keep Wolfe's titles in print. The new covers of both titles are disappointing and distracting. Yet, to coin a phrase, don't judge the book by it's current cover. If you like fantasy stories with strong female leads that explore complex issues of gender roles, societal pressures to conform and their impacts on the individual -- not to mention a good old fashioned adventure with a touch of lavender romance -- you'll enjoy "Shadows of Aggar." Pick up a copy of it and its companion book, "Fires of Aggar."

A Rare Gem

I read any science fiction and fantasy novels that have lesbian characters that I hear of or stumble across. Most of what is out there is written for mainstream audiences and often by straight authors. There's nothing wrong with that, one of the attractions of the SF and Fantasy genres is that authors explore a vast array of character types and cultures. But there is a definite lack of fantasy novels written by lesbians for lesbian audiences. What's worse is, most of what is in print is mediocre at best and not worth the space on the bookshelf at worst. In desperation, lesbian fantasy fans end up buying and reading the dreck anyway.

Shadows of Aggar is a rare exception. To say that it's the best lesbian fantasy novel I've run across is true, but defining it that way is a disservice to the book, since that isn't really saying much. It holds up on its own merits within the fantasy genre as a whole, not just within the sparse lesbian fantasy subset. Shadows of Aggar contains most of the elements that make fantasy what it is; a unique world and culture, swords and magic, and imperfect characters on a heroic quest. The icing on the cake is that the lesbian romance is good too.

One final note, as I noticed a previous reviewer mentioned hoping for more from Chris Anne Wolfe. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with cancer. So I highly recommend collecting all of her works currently in print if you enjoy her writing, as there won't be any more. Shadows of Aggar is by far her best, but the others are all worth a read.

an engaging and beautiful story

I have read a lot of fantasy and science fiction, but Chris Anne Wolfe's Aggar books are just about my favorites. There are only two, unfortunately, but I couldn't put either one of them down once I started. The setting and the story were fascinating, and I found the love story at the center of each book to be beautiful and unforgettable. I'm sure I will be reading these books many times....
