At last a great Phantom Sundays reprint book and work of art

After a year's wait, Hermes Press has finally released the first volume of Phantom Sundays. It is nothing short of outstanding. After comparing the pages to the original Newspaper Sundays (of which I have an extensive though incomplete collection), I can note that the colors are true to the originals, just much sharper and in vivid colors. The Sunday originals after all are 73 years old. This collection beats any other Phantom Sunday reprint in terms of completeness, format (half page style rather than tabloid or comic book format) and yes colors. It is a gorgeous reprint book. Production values are outstanding!

The stories and art range from Excellent to Outstanding. the League of Lost Men, with the Phantom surviving being burned alive inside a hut by burying himself under a dirt floor- and The Return of the Sky Band -- which reprises themes from both The Singh Brotherhood (1937) and the Golden Circle (1939)--. are amazing stories in cinematic style with unbelievably good art. Undoubtedly Return of the Sky band was also an inspiration for Lina Wertmuller's film "Swept Away" I agree with Lee Falk that Ray Moore was the very best Phantom artist in the entire run. He made Falk's stories truly come alive, with the perfect blend of realism and phantasy.

Even if you already have original Sunday pages or reprints (such as from Pacific Comics), if you are a Phantom fan you definitely should buy this book before it goes out of print. You will be very pleased. And this may encourage Hermes Press to reprint additional volumes of both the Sundays and Dailies on a more frequent schedule.

Wow - Wonderful Job!

Wow, I cannot overstate how impressed I am with this book. The colors on the pages are beautiful and what is really nice is the article on how this book was created by restoration using actual clippings of Sunday newspapers. Particularly impressive was the actual examples shown before and after the restoration. Even better, they show the page reference in the book for the ultimate result of the beautiful colored pages! I am in awe of this book and cannot wait for the next volume. The dailys are fine, but the Sundays are a whole different world. I simply could look at this book just for the artwook alone~. Fantastic job!

For those who wish they came in early

I devoured what I remember as hundreds of Phantom stories when Indrajal Comics was around in India. Later on when I learned that the stories had had many creative stewards over the years, I was amazed at how every pairing of writer and artist had managed to stay faithful to the vision of this amazing hero and his simple mission. And yet I had never read the very first stories, the daring debut of this forgotten prototype of all the Supermen and Batmen to follow... so I rushed to buy this volume as soon I learned about it. Primarily to read at bedtime to my son, to introduce him to the derring-do of my childhood mind. I wondered if it might be too slow or just too old-fashioned for a child of this century but, to my immense joy, I could see his eyes widen when the skull ring left its mark and feel his fists clench when Devil pulled his master out of a tough spot. It's still all as exciting as I remember... I guess courage, integrity, chivalry and pride simply have ageless appeal. Thankfully, I am still as unoffended by the innocent white superiority that I never noticed as a child - it was of its time and was never mean-spirited. I don't know if the expression existed thirty years ago but my I agree with my son when he exclaims that the Phantom is "bad-ass!"

About the Author
J. Clark Scott has had a long and diverse career in the computer industry, starting at large companies such as IBM and Intel, and eventually becoming the author of four successful consumer software packages. Early in his career, he noticed how confused some of his friends were about computers and gave them lectures to teach them how simple the basics really were. It was at that time that the idea for this book was born. This is his first book, but one that has been in the works for decades.

The standard first textbook on computers for everyone

I have been a software developer and software architect for over 40 years, starting at a time when you worked "so close to the computer" that you naturally knew how they worked. Over the years, I have seen that knowledge more and more absent from each new generation of developers that came along that I have led and mentored. It seems that the fundamentals simply aren't taught any more.

My standard approach has been to give informal seminars to my developers to get them this vital information. But I have been looking far and wide for a book that describes exactly how a computer operates that could be understood by anyone. After all this time, I finally found it. (As Archimedes would have said, "Eureka!")

This book builds up gradually from first principles until without realizing it, the reader suddenly finds he or she knows all about how computers work.

Mr. Scott defines every technical word the first time he uses it so you are never left wondering what it all means. Nothing I have seen even comes close to this book. It must have taken a lot of painstaking effort to work out and refine how to present every detail in a way that would not lose anybody along the way, no matter what their level of knowledge at the beginning.

Once the first copy arrived and I went through it in detail, I realized that this was what I had been looking for to provide the fundamentals that junior developers needed but had never been taught. So I bought 20 more copies and made the book the first step in the required curriculum to train my whole company -- but not just the "computer guys", everyone who uses a computer for any purpose.

The beauty is that this is not just a book for people who want to be or become computer professionals, it is a great textbook for all ages -- schools, homeschooling, college and anyone who is just curious about how computers work.

The book is so well written. It is informal, easy to understand and definitely complete.

There is a lady in my company who works with computers but had know idea how they really work. With the book, there was no stopping her. I found a simple, free computer program on the web (called LogicSim) that allowed her to actually build circuits (by drag-and-drop) and then click switches and see the results. She can easily apply what she learns right there and is very excited about what she has learned and how simple it all is. She has a new-found confidence in her work that is observable. Many others have expressed how easy it is to read and understand.

If you want to drive a car effectively, it is a pretty good idea to know the basics of how a car works. In the same way, having the knowledge you get from this book helps you with everything you do with computers.

In my opinion, Mr. Scott's book should be the standard first textbook on computers for everyone from now on ... at least until such time as some brand new technology arrives that completely changes the way our computers are built and work, which probably won't be in the foreseeable future.

It really is for Everyone

I am currently a 2nd year Electrical Engineering student and I am enrolled in a Digital Logic course. I found this subject to be very interesting and decided to research further into how computers use simple gates to do such complex functions. That is when I came across this book. Even with the little previous knowledge I had, this book broke everything down - from the simplicity of a register, to the building blocks of the RAM and CPU. It was enlightening to easily read more in depth on an otherwise extremely complex subject and finish the book with the knowledge of how most computers work. I highly recommend this book to my fellow Electrical and Computer engineering colleagues.

But don't think that just because engineering students find use of this book, that it is too complicated for those out of the discipline. The author does a great job of breaking down every little necessary nuance of each building block and thoroughly describes how each block works together to make a computer work; all wrapped up in a short ~200 page book. It is written without complex, technical jargon which avoids confusion wherever possible, and is readable by most who have a strong desire to learn more about how computers work.

This was such an interesting and informative read. Again, I highly recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest curiosity about how a computer works.

Loved it. Anyone who really wants to understand how ...

I have always been interested in electronics and computers. My father was a old-time main frame COBOL and FORTRAN programmer and he was always very nebulous to me about how a computer actually worked. What I've always wanted to understand is how a computer uses basic physical principles (circuits) to generate logic - I understood Claude Shannon's original thesis on the idea of use simple relays for Boolean logic but I never made the jump to higher order processes. This book is the bridge! The author makes it very simplistic from the start and builds slowly to more complex ideas until - before you know it - you basically understand how the electronic circuits create the abstract ideas of registers/buses/memory address...etc.... Loved it. Anyone who really wants to understand how your program ultimately is broken down into the basics of circuits, this is the book for you.

MOSTLY USELESS!!!

I am heartily disappointed!!!

I am surprised by the positive reviews about this book. I find very little about it easy to use. There are some fatal flaws to the organization of this text that make it practically useless for students and practicing nurses. I purchased this book at Barnes & Noble after looking at it for a bit. I saw two sections which led me to believe the book would be more useful that it really is. OVERVIEW OF THE NURSING PROCESS in the preface is top notch. It explains how nursing diagnosis fits into the nursing process. Appendix A Selected Nursing Diagnoses by Medical Diagnosis APPEARS AT A QUICK GLANCE to be useful. However, none of the nursing diagnoses listed under each of the medical diagnoses are accompanied by page numbers which tell the reader where in the book to find the explanatory information for that nursing diagnosis. To make it worse, many of the nursing diagnoses listed in Appendix A are not listed as stated in the Index making it impossible to quickly find the relevant page for the desired nursing diagnosis. The Table of Contents is no help finding a specific nursing diagnosis explanatory material. The TOC lists 8 main sections (Adult Health, Adolescent Health, Child Health, Maternal-Neonatal Health, Geriatric Health, Psychiatric and Mental Health, Community-Based Health, and Wellness) without listing what nursing diagnoses are contained in each section. The reader has no way to find a specific diagnosis without paging through entire sections which MAY contain the diagnosis of interest. What idiot has time to page through entire sections of a book to find one or two diagnoses???!!!

In my opinion, the organizational structure of the text is totally inappropriate. Nursing diagnoses are intended to diagnose human responses to disease. The organization should center around functional problems and disease rather than populations. Are you telling me that only older adults can have fluid overload and not adults or children? The indexing of this text is wholly inadequate making it practically useless to anyone who has a time deadline (like students and practicing nurses)

If you manage to find the diagnosis you're interested in, you're in luck!!! The information given for each nursing diagnosis looks very useful.

In short, parts of the text look great, but GOOD LUCK FINDING WHAT YOU NEED!!! My advice...go to Barnes & Noble and read the preface then buy another book.

Not simple to follow for beginners

This book was the recommended one for writing our care plans. It's not easy to align the goals to interventions. I'm ordering the Gulanick version and will use both to cross check.

AWESOME book for clinical and HW assignments in nursing school

I totally LOVE this book! It is so helpful in writing care plans and is laid out so nicely! This was not recommended to us nursing students to purchase but another nursing student in my class purchased it, which is how I became aware of it. It's worth every dime and has helped a lot in clinical and HW assignments. A MUST HAVE for every nursing student!
