Good overview, sometimes confusing

Like the rest of the For Dummies books, this one assumes that you have little or no background in the topic that you're reading about. Unlike some of the other Dummies books, the author Thomas Clark restrains from cracking stupid jokes every other paragraph. How refreshing! His writing style is direct, but friendly, without being condescending.

The book's first two chapters cover the basics of and the differences between macro and close-up photography. Here it got a little confusing: first Clark says the differences don't really matter, then he says that they do. You may have to read that twice to get what he's saying; it has to do with the ratio of your image size on your camera's sensor to the actual size of the subject. Once you understand this, you're ready to move on. Next, chapter 3 gets into composition and learning how to see creatively -- no photo book is complete without that. That completes Part I of the book.

Part II has four chapters that cover your photography tools: camera, lenses, reversing rings, extension tubes, and more. Clark gives you tips on shooting macro for both digital SLR cameras and for digital compact cameras that have macro capability. Part III covers lighting, composition, and exposure. Both natural light and artificial light sources are covered, and Clark gets more detailed about composition and how to select your exposures.

Part IV has six chapters on photographic subjects that you're likely to encounter with macro: nature, such as insects and plants; people and pets; product photos and still life; jewelry and other shiny stuff; and extreme macro. There's a chapter on post-production, which is what you do to your digital images once you get them onto your computer. Here I have a big bone to pick. The chapter attempts to cover too much ground and makes too many assumptions: first, the author (and editors) expects you to be working in Photoshop, and secondly, instructions are given only for Mac keyboard shortcuts (chapter 17, page 270). Not everyone works with Photoshop and most certainly not everyone is using a Mac. The editors should have caught this and I'm marking the book down one star because of it.

The book is very well illustrated with a variety of subjects: a shell, a needle and thread, colorful beetles, jewelry, and even a rotini pasta noodle! The photos are clear, crisp, and interesting, and the author tries to prompt your creativity by giving you ideas for photo stories. I recommend the book, but do try to read chapter 17 as an overview and not as a step-by-step instruction guide for every digital imaging program on every computer platform. That's for a few other books.

Continues the Great Work of the Dummies Books

Background: I am a Nikon shooter and shoot only in raw (limited exceptions). My status as a photographer is best described as part-time professional in that I have a day job but make low level money on nights and weekends using my skills. I also only shoot with Nikon pro-level glass.

This book continues the great work of the Dummies series on digital photography to include Digital Photography Exposure For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)), Digital Photography Lighting For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)), and Digital SLR Photography All-in-One For Dummies. It is best described as a series for beginner DSLR users to intermediate users; typically consumer level users seeking to move up and soon to upgrade to cameras such as the Nikon D300s and higher for greater on camera control of exposure and lighting. This book introduces Macro Photography, a subject misunderstood by just about every consumer level shooter.

This book is written for a target audience of beginner photographers and serves as a good source of broad foundational knowledge from which you can build. Book layout is well thought and very logical, with the typical Dummies guide "readability" that I consider superb. The book covers equipment but does not push you into buying anything as some other authors tend to do in more advanced books. Of interest to me was his use of ordinary items as light modifiers, demonstrating with before and after photos that really drive home the point (I personally modify my 10 YO's point and shoot flash with a piece of a napkin for stunning results). As another reviewer noted, anyone who has an SLR and is just getting into lighting, this would make a nice resource but if you don't have an SLR, the info is still good, but you won't be able to apply as much control.

This book would be a great gift for consumer level shooters that want to go beyond the "P" (Program) controls of their camera. Also, a lot of the lessons transcend macro photography and can be applied in a myriad of shooting situations. Beginners will see immediate improvements in their macro work after just a few chapters, assuming they follow the book. Intermediate and advanced users less so, commensurately. The illustrations and layout of the book are stunning in my view. This is atypical of the series.

Great Book!

Digital Macro & Close-Up Photography is a great book for learning how to capture close-up shots with your digital camera. I honestly can't think of anything this book leaves out when it comes to this subject. Everything from the correct equipment to shooting techniques is covered in easy to understand detail. Another great thing about this book is that it is full of color photographs that the reader can use for examples. I found these full-color examples and technique comparisons were really helpful in understanding the authors points.

Thomas Clark also reviews many macro lenses and other equipment to help the reader make an informed decision when it comes to buying the right equipment for macro photography. I will not list all of the specific chapters and topics since you have the ability to see the table of contents for the book on this very page. I will simply say that this book really helps the reader understand different macro photography techniques, something that most basic photography books neglect to cover.

I am merely an amateur photographer, so I will not attempt to get technical in this review. What I will say, is that from the point of view from someone with little experience and knowledge in this field, I found this book easy to understand and very helpful. I think that it is a great book which covers the subject in such a way that even the layman like myself can understand and grasp the concepts that the author explains in this book. Well organized and extremely helpful!! 5 Stars!

Lesbian: Pillow Queen by Kathleen Hope is a sweet and sexy audiobook about a kismet-like budding romance of two women who meet at work. Since this is a fairly short story most of it is focused on the exposition that leads up to the lovers’ first sexual encounter, which is also the first lesbian sex for both of them. The writing and narration are very well executed, but for those familiar with lesbian slang the title may be a bit misleading. The term pillow queen refers to a―usually femme―lesbian who is somewhat selfish and generally does not reciprocate in providing her partner sexual intimacies. That scenario is not applicable with this story, in which each lover enthusiastically pleasures the other.

A must have for trauma medicine

This is my second go to book. It's great while learning cardiology and trauma medicine. The heart itself can be a very complex and complicated organ and EKGs might feel intimidating at first but this book alongside classroom education, hands on education, pharmacology and your main trauma medicine book , are your survival guides. The layout is perfect, easy to find things, easy to add stick notes or your own handwritten notes. Cardiology changes with AHA every once in awhile but this book versus the most recent has no dramatic changes, so if I lost this book I'd feel comfortable buying the year of this book again. The pages don't bend or tear which is nice conclsidering the book is 5 years old and yes it took me 5 years to write a review but all the better because I can say it is durable and up to date with current standards.

In Chapters 4-7, we discuss instructional design for online learning, providing the reader with a systematic yet flexible process that capitalizes on the interaction among pedagogical models, instructional strategies, and learning technologies. This process enables novices and experts to engage in systematic, effective, and contextualized online learning design. Chapters 8-9 provide a discussion of the evolution of authoring systems—from their use in developing computer-based instruction to Web-based instruction—and the emerging nature of course management and learning management systems. This discussion provides the reader with a thorough understanding of past, present, and future instructional technologies and a comprehensive set of tools and techniques with which to select appropriate e-learning delivery applications and implement online learning in multiple contexts.

In this book, we attempt to contextualize the content to three main educational settings: higher learning, K-12 school, and corporate training. Whether you are a teacher, an instructor, a professor, an instructional developer, a trainer, an educator, an administrator, or a graduate student, Online Learning: Concepts, Strategies, and Application will contribute in a unique way to your understanding, implementation, and delivery of online learning. Its nine chapters and interactive companion Web site can be consulted individually or collectively according to need and context. Briefly, Chapter 1 covers the evolution of distance education from pedagogical and technological perspectives and presents a theoretical framework for thinking about online learning based on learning as a social process and the impact of globalization on sociocultural practices. Several pedagogical and technological constructs for online learning are also discussed in this chapter. In Chapter 2, we describe the roles and competencies of the online learner and the online instructor and the learning affordances and logistical and implementation challenges that learning technologies present for the learner and the instructor in online learning. The chapter also covers institutional and administrative challenges associated with online learning, including copyright and intellectual property issues as they relate to electronic media and online courses. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the current state of research on online learning and a synthesis of specific results for application and consideration in designing, developing, and supporting online learning environments.

Chapter 4 details a systematic process of design and development for online learning environments called the Integrative Learning Design Framework for Online Learning. This framework is grounded in the time-tested processes of traditional instructional design as well as emerging pedagogy, the result of which is an innovative and flexible process for developing online learning environments grounded in learning theory. Based on knowledge acquisition models and learning theories that have permeated the field of instructional design and technology, Chapter 5 covers constructivist-based or learner-centered pedagogical models and includes a description of their instructional characteristics and application in online learning. Moving from models to strategies, in Chapter 6, we present 13 instructional strategies that synthesize the instructional characteristics of constructivist-based pedagogical models and describe their enactment in online learning, using specific learning technologies. Chapter 7 details a systematic process for evaluating online learning based on the developer's goals and contexts. The chapter provides a review of both formal and informal evaluation examples that can inform evaluation efforts involving online learning environments.

Chapter 8 provides an overview of authoring tools, course management systems, and learning content management systems, and their past, present, and future implications for the design and development of learning content and instructional activities. The focus of Chapter 9 is specifically on course management systems. We describe their pedagogical and technological features and provide explicit examples of how these features can be used to support instructional and learning activities in online learning. The chapter also includes guidelines for selecting course management systems from both an institutional perspective and an administrative perspective.

Pedagogical Features

Each chapter contains the following pedagogical features:

• Learning objectives: A set of learning objectives is provided as an advance organizer for the content. Students can use these objectives as a framework for organizing their learning and as an evaluation tool for assessing their understanding after completing the chapter. These objectives can also be used as guidelines for keeping a reflective journal.
• Authentic scenarios: Scenarios related to the design, development, and implementation of online learning in higher education contexts, school settings, and corporate settings are provided at the beginning of each chapter. The scenarios are designed to provide real-world relevance to the chapter content and to activate prior knowledge.
• Prompting questions: Questions related to the scenarios are woven into the chapter text to actively engage the reader in thinking about the concepts and issues discussed.
• Figures and tables: Multiple figures and tables are used throughout the chapters and at the companion Web site to provide visual aids.
• Learning activities: The learning activities at the end of each chapter are designed to promote reflective thinking. Some are linked to the scenarios presented at the beginning of each chapter, others are linked to previous chapter content and activities, and many are linked to the Companion Website, which contains additional examples of the concepts discussed. These learning activities engage students in applying online learning concepts and strategies in real-world contexts. Students can work on them individually or collaboratively (see also the Companion Website).
• Resources: Online resources are provided for each chapter at the Companion Website. These resources can be used for structuring additional learning activities based on the instructor's and/or student's need and context.
• References: This book integrates current theory and research. An extensive list of references is provided at the end of each chapter to support further exploration and research.

Book is designed cheaply, but the content is priceless!

I used this book throughout my entire Master's Program in Instructional Design and Development. It is a great resource for online learning, especially when designing constructivist learning environment. I do agree that the production quality is really cheap and most of the pages do look like photocopies, however my book has held up through 2 years of courses (and I reference it often). I would highly recommend this book for its content, if you can get over the photocopy-looking pages.

A poor quality textbook

The book I received has a poor binding, and the pages appear to be photocopied. Text is difficult to read, and images that were obviously originally in color are only black-and-white blurs. Amazon.com sent me a replacement copy, but it had the same defects.

I strongly suggest purchasing this book from a college bookstore or other reputable source if at all possible.

About the Author
A gamer by vocation and an office dweller by dint of circumstance, Sorin lives in the beautiful city of Vancouver with his wonderful wife and their vicious parrot. Born in Romania, Sorin has stubbornly resisted the temptation to learn English for well over twenty years. When he finally gave in, it was not work and nor was it video games that weakened his resolve, but rather the mindboggling discovery of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Monty Python. With such teachers, it is no wonder that, much in the same way some lucky people learn to ride before they walk, Sorin has learned to be funny before being fluent (even if he says so himself). A late bloomer, Sorin Suciu made his literary debut in 2013 with The Scriptlings, a tongue-in-cheek contemporary fantasy aimed at geeks and mortals alike.

An Amazing New Find That Deserves To Be A Bestseller

[[VIDEOID:mo86YOY5ZS4ST3]]Okay, ladies and gents, it's not often that this happens, but I come to you absolutely SMITTEN by my favorite new find. It's a book called The Scriptlings, by indie authors Sorin Suciu.

You know it's good because it's got 1337-speak in the title

Okay, so here's a measure of how good this book is: I can think of no other way to begin this book review than by comparing it to Terry Pratchett. It's exactly that flavor of insouciant, laugh-out-loud fantasy. It's definitely not Pratchett--it's slightly more "Americanized" (odd, because it's set in Canada) with a bit more violence, a bit more almost-profanity (again, odd in Canada) and a whole lot more sex. It's like Pratchett if Pratchett was American instead of British.

I found this book thanks to the authors contacting me through my book review line. I must admit, I had been considering removing my book review line. Most books I get through that line feel like a chore to read--they're not bad, necessarily, but they're not great. I will tell you unequivocally--this book was great with a capital GREAT. Now, I say that with some caveats. It's a nerd's book. It has lots of in-jokes from contemporary pop culture and fantasy, and more than a few computer geek/programmer jokes. Those are what this book is all about--if that's not your cup of tea, you might not enjoy it as heartily as I did.

The premise of the book is that, in modern day, Magicians live among us. Magicians take apprentices from time to time, and these apprentices are called Scriptlings (hence, the title). Magic is dependent on code, similar to computer code, but it can only be rendered in dead languages (Latin, Sumerian, etc.). Over the last little while, magic has been slowly seeping out of the world, resulting in a decline in the number of Magicians out there. The brand-new Scriptling Buggeroff (more on that in a moment) is caught up in a plot to reverse this decline and restore balance to the world, all while contending with his own magical education.

MAIN CHARACTERS

(By the way, it's a testament to the skill of Suciu that I was able to write this section without needing to refer back to the book once. Very unusual in my book review posts).

BUGGEROFF: I suppose I should let you know right off the bat that, in the Scriptlings universe, Magicians choose dirty words for their "magic names." Such is the case with Buggeroff, a brand new Scriptling apprenticed to Master Loo (see below). Buggeroff is brought quite unwillingly into the world of Magicians and magic, and while simultaneously beginning his magical education under Master Loo, he is caught up in the plots of Merkin and Master Sewer to restore the balance of magic to the world. Awkward, bumbling and yet intensely brilliant with magic due to his prior knowledge of computer programming, Buggeroff is a charming protagonist who had me laughing from his first appearance on the page.

MERKIN: As the book's second paragraph states, "If you know what a merkin is, then shame on you. if you don't then, suffice it to say, it is a nasty word." Merkin is a young Scriptling apprenticed to Master Dung. She leaves his employ for reasons I will not reveal here (spoilers, after all) and becomes the apprentice of Master Sewer instead. Merkin is an exceptionally brilliant young Scriptling whose command of magic often rivals or even surpasses her masters. She has a dark history to run from, one that is tantalizingly fed to the reader piece by piece as the story progress. At once prideful (and therefore fallible), hypersexual, and possessed of a certain naivety about the world, Merkin is a fantastic female character who I thoroughly enjoyed journeying with. My one complaint is that she is the only female human character in this cast of five. But no matter. Feminism aside, the book is a fantastic read and Merkin provides enough excellent character for multiple women. She is certainly the best character in the book in terms of entertainment value, backstory and development, and plot agency.

MASTER LOO: Master Loo is the old, doddering, frighteningly forgetful master who brings Buggeroff into his Scriptlingship (as stated before, quite unwillingly and unpleasantly). Far from a tyrannical or overbearing master, however, we really get the sense that he only did it as an odd experiment to see what would happen. That feeling is further developed through the course of the rest of the book. Master Loo is as entertaining as any other member of the cast, very smart (when he can keep his mind on the matter at hand) and a wonderful mentor figure to Buggeroff.

MASTER SEWER: Master Sewer is a former Scriptling of Master Dung's, and therefore is only too willing to help Merkin once she escapes from under his dominion. Master Sewer is incredibly attracted to Merkin, though he tries his hardest to restrain himself due to their Master/Scriptling relationship. Though a powerful Magician in his own right, he finds himself constantly surprised at the tenacity and brilliance of the younger Merkin as he attempts to instruct her in all things Magical.

MASTER DUNG: A terrible, smelly, ugly and cruel old man, Master Dung makes life miserable for all of his Scriptlings. He is forcibly left by Merkin early on in the story, and becomes obsessed with revenge when she joins forces with Master Sewer afterwards. Pursuing his quest for vengeance across the rest of the novel, Master Dung schemes, connives, and subjugates the will of semi-intelligent helper entities to get what he wants.

PROS AND CONS: This is a tough section. There is nothing about this book that I can easily consider a "con," other than the minor point of only a single female major character. So instead, I guess we'd better just go over the Pros.

PRO: Hilarious. This is every bit as hilarious as some Discworld novels, complete with footnotes that link together quite nicely in the Kindle version of the book that I received. I haven't laughed out loud this often and this hard since...well, since the last Pratchett novel I read.

PRO: Magic System. Suciu's magic system is intensely intriguing, and will be even more so to anyone with even the vaguest smattering of programming or general computer knowledge (as I have).

PRO: Great characters who only slightly slide into stereotypical archetypes. Each has their own quirks, vices and differences in manner and appearance that make them appealing to a reader. Again, very Pratchett-like.

OVERALL RATING: 5 out of 5 STARS

Seriously. Go buy this book. Currently it's only available in paperback, but I don't believe that you'll regret paying for a paperback. The author has notified me that it's coming out on Kindle in the near future (I believe he said in the next month).

Excellent, hilarious debut novel

Sorin Suciu writes in the foreword to The Scriptlings that he was strongly influenced by Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. Indeed, when I first started reading The Scriptlings, it reminded me a lot of Pratchett's first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic - clever and amusing situations, and lots of footnotes. Like that early Pratchett, it seemed a bit rough around the edges, but showed great promise.

The more I read, though, the more I liked. Suciu sent me a copy and asked me to review it, having seen in my bio that I am a software developer, and The Scriptlings supposes that magic spells are constructed like computer programs. The book has two protagonists: Simon is a programmer who gets recruited by the magician Loo and takes on the name Buggeroff (the idea is that all magicians use an "ugly" name.) Silvia was born to magic and took on the name Merkin (Google it). When the book opens, Merkin is apprenticed to the magician Dung, who is a pretty nasty piece of work. Merkin and Buggeroff's paths don't cross until later in the book, and it doesn't go as either of them expect. Oh, and there's an invisible goat named Gertrude who is more than she seems.

The story is more complex than I usually see in first novels, but Suciu admits that he has been working on this story for years. While there are lots of jokes and puns that would appeal to computer-minded types, Suciu entertainingly explains the bits that might need it, but most can be enjoyed regardless. His take on Microsoft's Clippy had me in stitches. The spells that get cast are all uttered in the form of a programming language function call, but the words have to be in a dead language. (Memo to Mr. Suciu - Fortran would not work at all as it's not dead!)

The plot has enough twists and turns to make you want to keep reading. I had a bit of a problem with the ending, which seemed to skip over a lot that must have occurred just before it, but endings are very hard to do well. A sequel is planned, but unlike many such stories, The Scriptlings is entirely self-contained and won't leave you hanging at the end. I enjoyed reading it immensely and look forward to the sequel.

Fantastic! I can't wait for the sequel

Now this book all the key ingredients of a delicious read: laugh-out-loud and witty-side-snicker humour, characters who are flawed yet nonetheless wholly lovable, well-timed plot points with unexpected twists and lots of `gems' for the computer literate geeks.

As with all well-written fiction, the author managed to convince me that the story could be real! The characters could be everyday people I see in this city with hidden skills and identities. We love our computers so much and believe they're amazing creation anyways, so yes, in a way technology IS magical.

I remain very impressed by the writing. The plot is complex yet the pieces are so well woven together that all confusion is avoided. The pace is well timed, which is tricky considering the volume of fantastic witty remarks the author managed to squeeze in. Anyone acquainted with the mundane work life involving project management and wishes they could find a shortcut to richness should experience The Scriptlings.

Oh, and I took some notes on how to deal with mortal men from one of the main characters, Merkin. At 19, she's a master of both magic and seduction so I bow to her greatness!

Taking a detour from the continental adventure of "The Templar's Apprentice", Kat uses the second book in the series to focus on Tormod, and how he deals with the abrupt upheaval of everything he's ever known, followed by the return to the small village, alone and without purpose. Instead, Kat takes Tormod to places that should be comforting and turns them into nightmares. Her use of Aine is especially intriguing, putting the pair in situations where they can't stand one another, but must be in physical contact at all times.

If you love knights and magic, than this series is for you. Especially awesome is that when you finish the series, there is so much history and story left about the Templar Knights, and all of it is worth looking at.

I read the first one as a school project the first hard to follow but this one really great and easy to follow the things that are going on in the book

A book everyone should read

The story of the Irish enslavement by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries is omitted by most history books, or else presented as a pleasant "work for travel cost" indentured-servant program. This book gives a raw picture of the reality experienced by the tens of thousands of Irish slaves who were taken to the West Indies through the voice of woman in her forced testimony just before she is executed. The slave masters' creation of "black" African slaves versus "white" Irish slaves was started at this time in order to divide their joint efforts in rebellion. In all of my years of studying history, I never learned this story until I read McCafferty's book. It has motivated me to research further into this hidden human genocide. This well-written story places the reader in the time where life was very cheap and justice very rare.

While the story is fiction, the historical facts are not. So many people overlook the enslavement of the Irish in the Caribbean, where the template for slavery in the Colonies was formed. I had no idea that the "Free Blacks", at first, were the offspring of the African man and the Irish woman in attempts to make a hardier slave. A superior slave, so to speak. It's not a pretty story, but what is when you have a ruling class with no regard for the people who make their luxurious lives possible--similar to life in the USA today. I've read the book twice and recommend it highly.
